Is a greener shipping industry obtainable?

Cavotec’s Alternative Maritime Power™ (AMP™) – that allows ships to turn off their engines when in port and plug into shore-side electricity – is an example of an innovative technology that substantially reduces carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions in port areas and surrounding communities. The benefits of AMP™ are easily measurable: every vessel using AMP™ saves around one tonne of pollutants per day.

But what about out at sea? We have discovered another great example of a technological innovation that could help the shipping industry reduce its environmental impact. Singapore-based firm, Ecospec has developed and patented a system that removes carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, and soot from vessel exhausts. The magic ingredient? Seawater. It’s a breakthrough that is attracting growing attention.
