Cavotec secures major MoorMaster™ equipment, servicing orders

Marine systems innovator Cavotec has won important MoorMaster™ automated mooring orders from existing MoorMaster™ customer, the Port of Salalah in Oman, for use at two container berths – another sign of the increasing acceptance of this innovative mooring technology by the global shipping sector.

“MoorMaster™ generates the safety and operational gains that are so critical to today’s port applications – this is especially true of container handling operations such as those at the Port of Salalah,” says Juergen Strommer, Cavotec COO, EMEA.

Cavotec is to supply 16 MoorMaster™ MM400E15 units for container berths 3 and 4 at Salalah. A three-year maintenance contract has also been signed – a renewal of an existing agreement – which will see Cavotec onsite service teams working closely with the port to provide support at all five MoorMaster™ berths.

MoorMaster™ units were first trialled at Salalah in 2006, and the technology was then introduced at berths 1 and 5. The technology has successfully reduced excessive vessel motion, common to the port, caused in part by “long waves” that are especially pronounced during the Khareef monsoon season.

The new units – eight each at berths 3 and 4 – are scheduled for installation before the 2017 Khareef season. Earlier this year, and prior to the 2016 Khareef season, eight MM400E15units were installed at berth 6. These units have met all operational requirements even during the most severe periods of long wave activity.

MoorMaster™ is a vacuum-based automated mooring technology that eliminates the need for conventional mooring lines. Remote controlled vacuum pads recessed in, or mounted on the quayside or pontoons, moor and release vessels in seconds.

The system dramatically improves safety and operational efficiency, and in many cases enables ports to make considerable infrastructure savings. To date, some 200 MoorMaster™ units have performed some 215,000 mooring operations at ferry, bulk handling, Ro/Ro, container and lock applications worldwide.

The vacuum units hold vessels at set distances from the berth, thereby avoiding the need for ships to be repositioned along the quay – resulting in operational improvements and reduced emissions from ships and tugs.

Our innovative automated mooring technology, MoorMaster™, recently passed a landmark 200,000 moorings at applications worldwide, highlighting the growing acceptance of this unique system.

MoorMaster™ is a vacuum-based automated mooring technology that eliminates the need for conventional mooring lines. Remote-controlled vacuum pads recessed in, or mounted on the quayside or pontoons, moor and release vessels in seconds.

Some 200 MoorMaster™ units, installed at 28 locations worldwide, have completed the 200,000 mooring operations at RO/RO, container and bulk handling, and lock applications; and in doing so have made mooring operations safer, more efficient, and even more environmentally sustainable.

Since its introduction in New Zealand in 1998, the award-winning technology has been steadily introduced at a variety of applications around the world including Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Oman, South Africa, the UK, and the United States.

Elsewhere, specially adapted MoorMaster™ units recently completed At Sea Demonstrations for a project with the US Navy, and we are also working on ATEX, (explosion proof), approved MoorMaster™ systems, potentially for use at LNG berths.

Two of the three applications in Norway combines our Automatic Plug-in System and one of our shore power units to automatically moor and then charge the battery power unit of a passenger and vehicle ferry – the first system of its kind anywhere in the world, powering the world’s first battery powered passenger ferry.

And in another recent development for MoorMaster™, Cavotec and global marine and energy services group Wärtsilä are to jointly develop the world’s first combined induction charging and automated mooring concept.

MoorMaster™ holds vessels off the berth producing a reduction in fender wear and tear. The system can also be used to reposition vessels along the berth without the need for tugs, mooring gangs, a pilot or vessels’ propulsion – resulting in operational improvements and reduced emissions. In some cases, the introduction of MoorMaster™ has also meant that operators have not needed to extend berth infrastructure.

Crucially, removing lines from the mooring process also makes mooring significantly safer for ship- and shoreside personnel.

As vessels are secured in a matter of seconds, compared to up to an hour with conventional techniques, MoorMaster™ also delivers significant operational efficiency gains. This also reduces the use of tugs, which also helps reduce emissions.

Electrification, automation drive port and ship projects

Last week we announced a series of projects with ports and shipping lines involving our innovative electrical supply and automated mooring systems.

The largest of these project is for eight MoorMaster™ automated mooring units for the Omani port of Salalah, which has already been using MoorMaster™ at a number of different berths for several years.

We’re also encouraged to see a number of orders for one of our latest innovations: our Automatic Plug-in System (APS). APS automates the electrical power and communication connection of cranes, ships and other mobile equipment to the power grid, thereby expanding the use of mobile electrical equipment. The system delivers cost savings, environmental benefits and improved safety standards.

At DP World’s major development at the Port of Yarimca in Turkey, we’re set to supply APS equipment that will provide electrical power and communication connection for Electric Rubber Tyred Gantry (ERTG) cranes. And in another project at the same port, we’re supplying Konecranes with APS equipment that will be installed on 18 ERTG. And for one of the largest container terminals in Portugal, we’re supplying APS for 11 ERTG.

And for a new container terminal in Surabaya, Indonesia and in Melbourne, Australia, we’re supplying a total of 22 cable reeling systems for Automated Stacking Cranes.

Elsewhere, for a major European shipping line, we’ve won a substantial order to supply Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) reel systems for nine new-build container ships. We’ve also been awarded a similar order for AMP equipment that will be installed on five container vessels for a Chinese container line. Our AMP systems reduce vessel emissions in port thereby helping to improve air quality in surrounding communities.

The St. Lawrence is the world’s first lock system to introduce automated mooring, and is introducing the technology at 13 of the locks on the Canadian side of the 600km waterway that links the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes.

MoorMaster™ supports Brisbane Airport expansion

Our innovative MoorMaster™ automated mooring system is delivering substantial safety benefits and efficiency gains at a dredging application in Australia, where our customer, dredging company Jan de Nul, is reclaiming 350 hectares of land for the New Parallel Runway Project for Brisbane Airport.

“MoorMaster™ vacuum system has been very effective […] because we were able to win more than 20 to 30 minutes per mooring / unmooring. We could also reduce the hazards (related to conventional mooring techniques) by using less manual handling,” says William Krijnen, Operational Superintendent, New Parallel Runway Project, Jan De Nul.

“The use of MoorMaster™ resolved our concerns with regards to safety hazards – (related to conventional mooring techniques and on dolphins in open water) – and this system also reduced the mooring/unmooring times significantly, approximately 1 – 1.5 hours per day,” he adds.

Eight specially adapted MoorMaster™ MM200 units moor the Charles Darwin dredger twice a day, and have been in operation since April this year.

MoorMaster™ locks onto biggest project yet

With our largest project for automated mooring to date – for 13 locks in the St. Lawrence Seaway in Canada – MoorMaster™ continues to shake up the shipping industry. 

MoorMaster™ is already in use at the Seaway and in the video below, you can see how the specially designed units hold vessels securely through variations in water level of up to 14m. The St. Lawrence is the world’s first inland waterway to introduce automated mooring.

Considered to be one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century, the 600km-long Seaway is made up of 15 locks that form an essential trade link between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes.

The project is the latest in a series of major orders for MoorMaster™ – a technology that is revolutionising the way ships are moored.

In November last year we announced what at the time was our largest order for the system, and our first in Africa. And in July we won a project to develop the world’s first integrated automated mooring and shore power system for a passenger ferry service in Norway.
