Luciano Corbetta, Cavotec Group Market Unit Manager Port & Maritime, is a guest speaker at this year’s Shoreside Power Conference, to be held on April 26 at Marittima Terminal 103 in Venice.

In association with Venezia Terminal Passeggeri and Ashcroft & Associates the European Cruise Council (ECC) has invited guest speakers from a variety of fields to share their insights about shore-to-ship power with port officials from around the world. The event is co-sponsored by ABB and the Association of Mediterranean Cruise Ports.

In addition to ECC members, equipment suppliers and representatives of the European Commission, there will be guests speakers from engineering group ABB, Copenhagen Malmö Port, Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruise, MSC Cruises, Port Metro Vancouver, Cochran Marine, Venice Port Authority, T&D Europe, ENEL Green Power and Stena Line.

The main issues to be discussed include harmonising voltages and frequencies and the role of local authorities and the European Commission.

“Cavotec’s Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) systems are fitted either onboard ships, or, as in the case of several cruise ship applications, on quaysides,” explains Corbetta.

“We offer a variety of shore to ship power systems that are adapted to meet the specific requirements of ports and shipping lines. Our systems are already in operation at ports across Northern Europe, Canada and the US.”

Concern over air quality in harbours has led to growing pressure on port operators to reduce carbon and nitrogen dioxide emissions. Cavotec AMP systems enable ships to turn off their engines when in port, and connect to shore-side electricity, thus helping to improve air quality in ports and surrounding communities.

Global engineering group and airport systems integrator Cavotec has won an order to supply advanced ground support equipment for the "Gateway to West Africa", Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

One of Cavotec’s four airport Centres of Excellence (CoE) in conjunction with PW Ghana, won the order worth several million EUR for the manufacture, supply and integration of a complete fuel hydrant system at the country’s main airport in Accra. The order plays an intrinsic role in the Phase III expansion project at KIA, sponsored by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), an agency of the Ghanaian government.
Cavotec engineers will provide full installation supervision of a new fuel hydrant loop at KIA, including fuel hydrant pits (low point, isolation valve and future connection pits), feeder, remote, passenger apron, bay zero and cargo arpon line and a cathodic protection system.

"Cavotec will manufacture, supply and supervise the installation of the new fuel hydrant system, which fits into the on-going expansion at Kotoka International," said Managing Director of Cavotec Dabico, Gary Matthews. "The order includes full integration, on-site commission and quality control. This is what Cavotec does best: working closely with our partners around the world to provide made-to-order complete system integration."

Situated 10 kilometres from the centre of Accra, KIA is Ghana’s sole international airport and consists of domestic, international and freight terminals. International airlines currently operating scheduled flights into KIA include Alitalia, British Airways, Delta, KLM Royal Dutch, Lufthansa, TAP-Portugal, United and Virgin Atlantic.

The aviation industry has been identified by the Ghanaian government as a potential driving force behind socio-economic development for Ghana and other countries in Africa. Ghana’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Kwabena Duffour, said he expects the KIA improvement project, "will create further opportunities for the expansion of flights in and out of Accra and seal Ghana’s status as the ‘Gateway to West Africa’."

According to a 2011 feasibility study by the US-based LPA group, the estimated total cost of the infrastructural requirements for KIA is US$405 million and will increase the airport’s capacity to handle more than 5.2 million passengers by 2013 (an increase of approximately 400 per cent on 2010 figures) and 49,325 tonnes of freight (up from 46,480 in 2010) during the same period.

Cavotec already has ground support equipment in operation in many parts of Africa, including Kenya, Nairobi, Senegal and extensively in South Africa.

Cavotec integrated systems for airports

Global engineering group and airport systems integrator, Cavotec, has received an order from US Air Force base RAF Mildenhall to supply advanced ground support equipment.

The order for aviation fuel hydrant equipment was placed by Spiecapag UK Ltd, part of the Spiecapag SA group of companies based in France, a regular contractor of RAF Mildenhall. Cavotec’s specifications were chosen among five competing proposals.

“We were chosen as all our hydrant equipment meets the demanding specifications,” says Gary Matthews, Managing Director of Cavotec Dabico UK. “We are specialists in the design, manufacture and integration of full-service ground support equipment and this new order confirms Cavotec’s position in the industry.”

The order includes Cavotec fuel hydrant pits on the apron as well as specialist equipment such as high point vent and low point drain pits. As part of the contract, Cavotec will also supply specialist off apron, rolling cover pits such as test and flush pits and prefabricated tank truck refuelling pits.

Mildenhall is situated in Suffolk, England and became a joint USAF-RAF operation base in 1950. The host unit is the 100th Air Refuelling Wing, which provides in-flight refuelling to US and NATO aircraft. Cavotec also supplies ground support equipment for a number of military bases in the UK, including RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, the largest station of the Royal Air Force.

Cavotec is a leading global engineering group, developing innovative technologies that enable the maritime, airports, mining and tunnelling, and general industry sectors operate more sustainably. Cavotec’s Airports market unit is made up of Cavotec Dabico, Cavotec Meyerinck, Cavotec Fladung and most recently Cavotec INET.

Working closely with airlines, aircraft manufacturers and airport operators, Cavotec designs, manufactures and integrates a broad range of advanced ground support equipment, including in-ground fuel and utility systems, tunnel systems and pre-conditioned air units and 400hz systems.

Through a strong focus on quality and innovation Cavotec’s systems have become the natural choice for industry operators. In addition to designing and manufacturing in-ground fuel systems, Cavotec also provides installation supervision and long-term support of its systems.

Leading global engineering group, Cavotec, has been awarded three orders for cable reel systems by industrial equipment manufacturer ZPMC for port operators DP World and Patrick Terminals that will power ship-to-shore cranes at applications in Australia, Brazil and the UK.

“These projects highlight Cavotec’s role as an expert supplier of advanced crane technologies, and the strength of cooperation that exists between Cavotec and its many partners,” says Gustavo Miller, Cavotec Shanghai Managing Director.

One of the orders is for cable reels for ship-to-shore and rail-mounted gantry cranes for the London Gateway terminal, a major new port development located on the north bank of the River Thames run by DP World. Once complete, the facility is set to handle the world’s largest container vessels and provide improved access to the UK’s road and rail networks.

Cavotec is to also supply medium voltage cable and spreader cable reels for six ship-to-shore cranes for another DP World project, this time in Brazil. This application is a new joint venture between DP World and several local partners.

Cavotec has also received an order from ZPMC for medium voltage cable reels and spreader cable reels for four ship-to-shore cranes for Patrick Terminals in Australia. This is a repeat order, with five units from the initial order delivered in December 2011.

Cavotec’s innovative technologies for the ports sector include MoorMaster™ automated mooring, Alternative Maritime Power shore-to-ship electrical power systems, Panzerbelt cable protection systems, marine propulsion slip rings, power chains and radio remote controls.

Cavotec’s innovative automated mooring system, MoorMaster, recently won the International Bulk Journal’s Award for Safety in Bulk Handling (Marine) sponsored by DNV. This is the latest in a series of awards for the unique technology.

Dedicated exclusively to the maritime dry bulk industry, the IBJ’s annual awards recognise achievements by individuals and companies that improve efficiency, safety and environmental protection.

According to the award citation: “Judges were impressed by Cavotec’s MoorMaster system installed in Port Hedland, Australia, as risk to personnel from mooring incidents is completely removed. Snap back related injuries as well as injuries from ‘man handling’ lines are now a thing of the past.”

The Port Hedland application, at the Utah Point dry bulk loading facility, entered service in 2010. Work is underway to install MoorMaster units at a second berth at Port Hedland.

MoorMaster was also a key component in the Port Hedland and Pinc Group’s successful entry for the 2011 Western Australia Engineering Excellence Awards. The entry went on to win the same category in Australia’s national Engineering Excellence Awards. The technology also won the Australia Bulk Handling Award 2011 for Best Practice in Occupational Health & Safety.

MoorMaster is a vacuum-based automated mooring technology that eliminates the need for conventional mooring lines. Remote controlled vacuum pads recessed in, or mounted on the quayside, moor and release vessels in seconds. In addition to improved safety and productivity, the technology also has the potential to deliver infrastructure savings in many applications.

The technology has performed more than 40,000 mooring operations to date at bulk handling, ferry, container ship and lock applications around the world.

Cavotec has completed work on the development of a unique marine propulsion system that, in conjunction with an innovative ship design, promises to improve fuel consumption by up to 25 per cent.

Cavotec was involved in the power, signal and fluid transfer to long-standing partner ABB‘s Contra Rotating Propeller Azipod XO®, which makes dramatic improvements to fuel economy and reduces environmental impact.

The Group supplied one of its marine propulsion slip rings (MPS) to be located inside the ship on top of the Azipod unit. The MPS also enables the pod and propeller to rotate 360 degrees, which reduces or eliminates the need for assistance from tugs in port.

The propulsion system has been included in the design of a 2,000-TEU container feeder ship by Danish naval design and marine consultancy Knud E Hansen. Among the key characteristics of the vessel and its propulsion system are the reduced need for water ballast, the potential for increased slow-steaming and flexible transit speeds.

According to a news release published by Knud E. Hansen, “The high container capacity [of the vessel] in combination with the fine hull lines and very efficient propulsion system gives the vessel a fuel economy 15-25% better per TEU than typical feeder vessels of similar size.”

Cavotec has supplied MPS since the early Nineties when ABB Marine and Kvaerner Masa Yard of Finland approached the Group for a R&D study into power, data and hydraulic transmission for a revolutionary ship propulsion system using an outboard electrical motor rather than the traditional (on-line shaft) inboard diesel powered propulsion.

Today, with MPS installed all over the world in cruise liners, ice breakers, ferries, military ships and other types of vessels, Cavotec is the only supplier able to offer a complete system combining electrical, data and hydraulic transmission.
