Another busy month for trade shows

Cavotec is exhibiting at and attending several major trade shows in September in all our industry sectors: Airports, Ports & Maritime, Mining & Tunnelling and General Industry. You will find more information about the major events during the first half of the month below. Please contact us if you would like to arrange a meeting with us at any of these shows.

Trade Show September

First off, Cavotec Russia will be present at the Kazanskaya Yarmarka Exhibition Center for the Oil, Gas & Petrochemistry 18th International Exhibition from 7th – 9th September. The aim of the exhibition includes the promotion of new technologies and equipment on the enterprises of the oil and chemical branch of the Volga region; expansion and strengthening of inter-regional and international business cooperation.

The 2011 AAPA Convention is held on 14th & 15th September and includes technical and policy committee meetings, business sessions and social networking opportunities for port professionals and others in the marine transportation industry. Cavotec USA will be among nearly 1,000 attendees from throughout the Americas will be in attendance.

Cavotec Deutschland GmbH will be at IUT ’11 – the International Underground Construction and Tunneling Fair that also takes place on 14th & 15th September at the unique Fair Hall of the Hagerbach Test Gallery in Sargans, Switzerland.

Smart Rivers 2011 Conference runs from 13th – 16th September at Westin Canal Place in New Orleans. The aim of Smart Rivers 2011 is to “Discover the Keys to Inland Navigation’s Sustainable Future Around the World”. Cavotec International and Cavotec USA will be present at this year’s event.

Compressed air to power ferries?

Cavotec’s Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) system, which uses shore-supplied electricity to reduce diesel-engine emissions from ships while they are in port, is one example of how innovative technology enables ports to operate more sustainably.

The prospect of higher fuel costs and environmental concerns are also inspiring the development of alternative forms of propulsion for marine transportation. In a recent article by Maritime Executive, compressed air, previously used to power mining locomotives, is put forward as an option for powering short-distance marine services.

Similar to the application of Alternative Maritime Power, vessels such as ferries can connect to compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems via high-pressure lines when at port. Small amounts of compressed air can be stored in on-board high-pressure tanks to provide short bursts of propulsion, while the main supply would come from natural gas stores in underground caverns. While in transit, compressed air would be transferred to low-pressure tanks to consistent supply during each voyage.

Compressed air as alternative maritime power for ferries

According to the article, “much of the technology needed to develop a marine compressed air propulsion system already exists and is well proven in related applications. The technology may be suitable for ships and tugs that operate short-distance voyages, such as ferry services or short-distance services at select ports. There is scope to further refine and develop compressed air propulsion for a variety of marine vessels.”

At Cavotec, we always enjoy hearing about innovative technologies that enable the ports, airports, Mining and tunnelling and general industries to operate more sustainably and work more productively. We shall be following the development of this particular approach with interest.

Cavotec UK at SPE Offshore Europe 2011

Cavotec UK will be exhibiting our offshore systems at SPE Offshore Europe 2011 – Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition held at the Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre from 6th-8th September 2011.

Visitors and exhibitors are welcome to visit Cavotec UK at stand 5D121 (Hall 5) and talk to us directly about the latest in radio remote controls, crane seats and cabins, Brevetti chains, connectors, EX equipment, cables and reelingsystems.

The theme this year is “Securing Safe, Smart, Sustainable Supply” and is expected to once again attract a global audience of engineers, technical specialists, industry leaders and experts.

The largest upstream oil and gas event outside North America consists of exhibitor stands, conferences, technical and plenary panel sessions, breakfast and lunch events and an intriguing Deep Water Zone.

In 2009, over 30,000 visitors from 94 countries attended the event.

British airport leads the field in carbon neutral initiatives

The Manchester Airport Group (MAG) has announced the opening of the first carbon neutral building in any of the European Union’s 27 member states.

Located on England’s south coast, the new arrivals hall at Bournemouth Airport is an advanced airport structure that emits zero emissions by drawing on a range of sustainable technologies. The building boasts roof-mounted solar cells, passive lighting and ventilation, solar shading, air-source heat pumps and a computerised building management system that controls the heating, lighting and cooling to maximise resource efficiency.

Europe’s first carbon neutral airport building

Cavotec’s Airports market unit develops integrated systems for airports around the world that help drive operational efficiencies, reduce tarmac congestion and improve air quality

Managing Director Rob Goldsmith said, “This is a truly innovative building and we believe it is the first carbon neutral airport building of its type in Europe.”

The airport, which handled approximately 750,000 passengers last year, is committed to its environmental responsibilities and has vowed to make the operation of its vehicles and energy use completely carbon neutral by 2012. Further initiatives include the installation of a bio-diesel boiler to provide heating to the new terminal building, which is expected to save some 546 tonnes of CO2 annually, as well as a green tariff on electricity. By 2012, 100 per cent of the airport’s electricity will come from the carbon neutral sources. MAG expects these measures will produce an annual reduction of 4,122 tonnes of CO2.

Bournemouth Airport has applyied for certification from Airport Carbon Accreditation – the carbon management certification programme launched by ACI EUROPE in June 2009. So far, over 40 airports in 18 European countries have been accredited at one of the 4 levels of the programme. The highest possible accreditation status ‘Neutrality’ have been achieved by 2 airports in Norway, 4 in Sweden and 2 in Italy, while Manchester Airport and a number of Europe’s major hubs are now accredited at the ‘Optimisation’ level,  the highest level possible with carbon offsetting. Collectively, accredited airports achieved a reduction of over 727,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2010.

Airport Carbon Accreditation is administered by WSP Environment & Energy and overseen by an independent advisory board.
